I was already dealing with a long run of RG-6 and did not want to introduce additional losses into the system. The stubs looked difficult to tune properly. I sealed all the outdoor connections with black sticky antenna sealant made by Andrews antenna for cell tower Heliax applications.

At the entrance into the house, I installed a grounding block with a direct ground (4 inch ground conductor length) to a ground clamp attached to a 1 inch cold-water pipe. That should drain any static charges to ground. I did place a 75 ohm resistor at the top of the antenna, opposite the feed point. I then added their email to my email address list and no further problems with things winding up in the junk mail box.

Also, the first response I got back wound up in my junk mail folder. I did receive a notice for each submission that it had been received so if you didn't get a confirming email that your submission was received you may want to resend it. I believe they state it may take around two-weeks for them to respond. Once I received that response and I submitted the info with the photos, the acceptance email came back in about 4 or 5 days. Quote from: W3DRM on April 12, 2014, 11:38:07 AM FR's response to my initial application submission took around 9-days if I remember correctly. Hope the storm doesn't take out my toilet with the soil stack vent! It's anchored quite well in the attic and the wind load is pretty low. Guess I'd better get the lightning arrestor installed ASAP! I got off the roof just as some storms rolled into the area. Still hoping for the nice stand-alone kit, but having lots of fun now! It is quite bewildering to navigate and set up at first, but works great (at least with shared Internet data). I am going to try the rtl1090 decoder with the dongle, along with PlanePlotter (which I purchased). I imagine the front end of the dongles can overload pretty easily on cellular and other signals. I wanted to avoid using a preamp at the antenna so as not to overload the dongle I ordered with garbage signals. I'm hoping the gain of the antenna and good location overcomes some of the loss. Loss at 1 GHz is rated at 6.1 dB per 100 feet. I have 100 feet of quad-shielded premium RG6 to reach the "shack". I built up a high-gain collinear antenna per some instructions I found. In the mean time, I wanted to play around with the technology. I would imagine a few of these stations are using equipment not supplied by FlightRadar24, so they may want a consistent 24/7 source. O'Hare and Midway both have a station or two nearby.

DUP, just a few miles east of me, has two stations indicated right at the airport, and the DeKalb station you mentioned. I'm not sure of the source of the map data, but it does appear my QTH is pretty well covered. I received a note back that they had received my first application, but I received no prior confirmation. I re-submitted my application and sent a note to the support email that I had submitted twice.

There is the much less expensive dongle SDR solution (around $20 USD) plus the addition of some software to decode and transmit the data via the Internet. We can, of course always purchase our own equipment and upload to the FR24 network so, not all is lost. Too bad we don't know what the selection criteria is for these systems. I then added their email to my email address list and no further problems with things winding up in the junk mail box.ĭon - WD9DMP, if your QRZ location is correct, it appears there are two FR24 stations just east of you at the Dupage County Airport and one west of you in Dekalb. FR's response to my initial application submission took around 9-days if I remember correctly.
